What is the basis of your self-worth?

There are two bases of self-worth: one is very popular but incorrect—the world’s perspective; the other is unpopular but true—the biblical perspective.

​Let’s look at the world’s perspective on the basis of self-worth: Many think that human worth is based on possessions (money, skills, assets, multiple degrees), achievements (career, personal, and relationship goals), physical attractiveness (how we look), or public acclaim (fame—being known by the world).

​This foundation is neither permanent nor reliable; it is constantly changing. Yet, this is how the world wrongly projects the basis of our self-worth. If you are influenced by this view, you will struggle a lot in your personal life to prove your worth to others, putting yourself under immense pressure. Don’t worry, God has good news for you.

​Now let’s look at the biblical view of self-worth: The Bible teaches that we are all made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26–27). No matter who you are, what you do, how you look, or where you are, you and I—each and every one of us—are created in the image of God. In Latin, this is called imago Dei, which means “image of God.”

​The Scripture says we are the image-bearers of God. No one is made lesser in this image; we are all equally and uniquely created in the likeness and image of God. Understanding this will give you an unshakable reason to feel positive about yourself.
​In what ways are we made in God’s image? God obviously did not create us exactly like Himself, because He is our Supreme Creator. Instead, we are reflections of God’s glory and character.

​The “image of God” describes our entire self, including our reasoning, creativity, speech, moral capacity, and self-determination. We will never be totally like God because He is beyond human comprehension (He is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent). However, we do have the incredible ability to reflect His character through our love, patience, endurance, kindness, forgiveness, and faithfulness.

​Do not seek the basis of your self-worth from this world’s perspective. Instead, know that you are made in God’s image and share many of His characteristics. This will provide you with a solid foundation for self-worth.

​When God created the earth, He created every creature with a great purpose (to be fruitful and multiply). He created these creatures for humans, but He created humans for Himself. Now think about how much more purpose God must have for us. So, do not say, “I don’t have a purpose” or “I am an accident.” God created everything and everyone with a purpose, including you.
​God saw all that He created as good. You are a part of His creation, and He is pleased with how He made you (Genesis 1:31). You are His workmanship (Ephesians 2:10).

​Why is this important?

Realizing that you are a person of worth helps you love God, know Him personally, and treat others as His image-bearers. Always remember that God made you for a good reason, and you are deeply valuable to Him.
