“On the day that you eat it, you shall most certainly die.”⚰️

The Lord God commanded Adam and Eve, “You may freely eat from every tree of the garden; but from the tree of the knowledge (recognition) of good and evil you shall not eat, otherwise, on the day that you eat from it, you shall most certainly die.”
Did Adam and Eve disobey and eat the fruit?
Yes, they did. Did they die on the day they ate it? Yes, not only Adam, but all mankind in Adam experienced death, both spiritually and physically. Physical death, in this sense, refers to becoming mortal, as they were originally created immortal.

“When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.” (Romans 5:12)

Even at the very beginning of Scripture, we see the great fall of humanity. Our fall is not merely a demotion or a temporary punishment; it is death. This means that, spiritually, there is no life within us. The human spirit dies when it becomes disconnected from God or acts independently of Him. This condition is called death—indeed, it is spiritual death. It is not simply a less spiritual state, but complete separation from true spiritual life.
When we all sinned, we not only lost that divine connection, but we also became enemies of God by coming under the rule of darkness. “By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger”

We Were Not Just Sick — We Were Dead

“And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, has He made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses.” (Colossians 2:13)
“Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.” (Ephesians 2:1–3)

Consider a healthy person living life happily and enjoying all his possessions. Suddenly, he becomes afflicted with a dangerous illness that leaves him bedridden. While he is under treatment, he is still able to respond—he can take medicine, be fed, and gradually show improvement while remaining alive.
This example reflects how we often misunderstand our spiritual condition before our conversion.
However, the truth is far more serious!!
God accomplished His great redemptive work and granted His free gift of grace not to raise us from a sickbed, but from a deathbed. We were already spiritually dead before God—unable to choose or incline ourselves toward His righteousness. We were not merely weak; we were dead!
And can a dead person respond? If God’s glorious work of grace were only outward and its effectiveness depended on our response, then no one could be saved from that dead state. But thanks be to God, His work is inward. It begins deep within our innermost being.
Who can touch and revive our spirit and soul? Only God can.“If we shake a dead body, it may move slightly due to our force, not because there is any life within it.”

The Example of Lazarus

Think of Lazarus, who was dead. When Jesus came to the tomb of Lazarus, He did not expect a dead man to respond to His supernatural call. He did not say, “Lazarus, when I call your name, come back to your body and make yourself alive.” Lazarus had already been dead for three days. But thank God, we have an all-powerful God who alone has the power to overcome death. When Jesus called out, “Lazarus, come forth,” it was His power over death that brought Lazarus back to life!
Lazarus became alive not by his own ability, but purely by the overcoming power of Christ over death.

God’s Grace in Making Us Alive

The chapter continues by explaining the work of God’s grace in bringing us back to life:

“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)” (Ephesians 2:4–5).

Though we were dead—helpless, unable to do anything for our restoration, without hope, and without any inclination toward the divine nature—God, who is rich in mercy and full of great love toward us, made us alive.
Our rebirth is compared with the resurrection of Christ from the dead. How was Christ raised? It was by the glorious power of the Father.

“For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.” (Romans 6:4)

There is no doubt that the same glorious power works in our spirit and quickens us to be alive in Christ for God. He quickened us, gave us life, and raised us by His glorious power of grace. That is why Paul boldly declares:

“It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!” (Ephesians 2:5)

In our regeneration, there is no human contribution or intervention involved. It is entirely the work of God. Therefore, all the credit and all the glory belong to Him alone!

Born Again by the Spirit

“Jesus replied, I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.” (John 3:5–6)

We need to be born again, and that is only possible by the work of the Holy Spirit in us. He quickens us and raises us from the dead state so that we are able to respond to God’s will. This quickening action is purely a divine initiation.
We are able to respond to God, but this response is enabled by God’s power. This power is not superficial or outward. He touches the spirit and soul of a person. God touches the root of our whole being, enabling our hearts to incline toward the divine nature.

This is the glory of the new covenant that He made through His Son, Jesus Christ:

“This is the new covenant I will make with my people on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” (Hebrews 10:16)

In many places, we read, “as we receive Him.” Yes, we receive Him—but how? It is through faith that we receive Him. How does that faith come? Does it come from human flesh or from the Spirit of God? That faith is a gift of God, given in our hearts at the moment of the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God gives that faith, usually by revealing His truth. That is why we see that human life cannot produce the things of God.
It is the Spirit of God who initiates that work in us! Because of this divine initiation (the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit), we believe, repent, seek God, persevere in Him, and grow.
All this is done by His divine initiation that the new life of God granted in us.

“For we are His handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.” (Ephesians 2:10) 

Here we see how Paul explains the truth, we are created in Christ, not merely changed or reconsidering our lifestyle decisions. Can anyone create something in us? Definitely not. That is why the Creator Himself came down to give us new life and create a new being in Christ.
All Glory to God Alone!
Now we do good works that please God because He—and He alone—by His glorious power has created a new spiritual life in us!
That is why, throughout our whole lifetime and even into eternity, we have no room to boast about anything we have done, even if we accomplish many things. Because who is the reason for it all? It is God alone and His grace alone. All glory to God!
Finally,

The God in whom Abraham Believed

“Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing.” (Romans 4:17)

Can you see the God whom Abraham believed in? He is the One who brings the dead back to life, and He alone is the One who creates new things out of nothing. When God acts supernaturally, who is there to help Him? If we are able to help Him create something, then it is no longer purely a supernatural work.
Surely, our regeneration is supernatural work of God !!. 🌟
